13 December 2015 : Google just revealed the first new feature of Android N” Android N is under development already, according to the team behind Pixel C. It seems that Google will release a huge upgrade soon enough, along with Split Screen and Multiwindow support. Thursday, during a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), the team who created the Pixel C let loose that they are now working on getting Split Screen as a feature for Android tablets. Consumer hardware director at Google, Andrew Bowers, added: “We’re working on lots of things right now for N that, of course, we wish we had, you know, yesterday”.
It is being reported that this feature is now being tested by the developers team on the Google Pixel C tablet. This was probably a good move for them since a lot of the Android fans out there would have some questions about the new tablet. The addition of a split-screen mode could make the critical difference between the Pixel C’s current status as an interesting device with untapped potential and a possible future as a genuinely useful tool for working on the move. While a lot of questions went unanswered – many would consider them the tougher questions, too – even simple questions like, “what devices do you use?” merely elicited the response that they all work with the Pixel C a lot.
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) by all standards has lagged behind in making the feature available on Android. Ars Technica concluded “This tablet’s entire reason for existing – to run Android – is also the worst thing about it”. Releasing into the markets with an aluminum body and a 10.2 inched display, the Google Pixel C sports a resolution of 2560×1800 pixels. The brushed metal casing that covers the rear of the Pixel C gives it a similar smart look to the iPad – still the benchmark for looks in a tablet. Android N is likely to launch late next year, but it’s now unclear what it’ll include.
Google is marketing the Pixel C as a high-end tablet (starting at $500) with a attractive design, frequent software updates and a separate, $149 Bluetooth keyboard/kickstand combo. Further, DisplayPort support is coming to Pixel C’s Type C although it’s not clear whether the feature will be bundled with Android N or introduced as an update to Android Marshmallow. However, split screen UIs aren’t exactly new to Android, as this is a feature that Samsung has been touting in its Galaxy Note series for a while now.
