West Indies have been crowned World Twenty20 champions after a 36-run victory over hosts Sri Lanka in a dramatic final in Colombo. Sri Lanka restricted West Indies to 137 for six wickets. Marlon Samuels produced a brilliant all-round performance, guiding the West Indies to victory . It is the West Indies’ first world title after a gap of 33 years having won the ODI World Cup back in 1979. They did triumph in the Champions Trophy in 2004.

  • Sri Lanka have now lost two successive 50-over World Cup finals in 2007 and 2011 and two World Twenty20 finals in 2009 and 2012.
  • Australia’s Shane Watson, who had four straight man-of-the- match awards and struck 249 runs to top the run-scoring list, was named player of the tournament
  • Marlon Samuels won the Man of the match Award.

Australia retains women Twenty-20 World Cup title

Australia successfully defended their women’s World Twenty20 title following an exciting four run win over arch-rivals England in the final on Sunday. Australia beat England on the final ball to retain the Women’s World Twenty20 title in Colombo. Jess Cameron hit the highest score of 45 in any World Twenty20 final to help Australia to 142-4 in their 20 overs before the champions restricted England to 138-9 at Premadasa stadium.
