Meena Kandasamy selected for Mayilamma award
•Tamil poetess and social activist Meena Kandasamy has been chosen for the third Mayilamma award.
•The award comprising a cash prize of Rs 15,555, a plaque and a citation
•Mayilamma was an Indian social activist Indian social activist, hailing from Plachimada in Palakkad district.
•Previous winners of the award were human rights activist Iom Shamila Chanu and Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi.
R. Chandrashekhar appointed as NASSCOM President
•R. Chandrashekhar was appointed as President of National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM),Indian IT industry’s trade body.
Vijay Zol selected as the Captain of India to lead the Under-19 Cricket World Cup
Vijay Zol of Maharastra was selected as the Captain of India to lead the Under-19 Cricket World Cup by the All-India Junior Selection Committee on 13 January 2014.
The U-19 Cricket World Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in February 2014.
Sanju Samson, the Kerala wicketkeeper batsman, has also been selected in the 15-man squad.
India won the U-19 World Cup title in 2000, 2008 and 2012.
The 66th Army Day
The 66th Army Day has been observed on 15 January 2014. The day is celebrated at the army command headquarters across India by organizing parades and other military shows.
The main function of the day is observed in the parade ground of New Delhi near the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate.
Army Day is celebrated in recognition of Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa’s taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from Sir Francis Butcher, the last British commander, in 1948.
