Minorities Rights Day was observed across the world to create awareness on rights of minorities. On this day, governments and NGO’s conduct debates on the recent developments in policies and practices in Minority Rights both in India and at the global level.
In India, National Commission for Minorities (NCM) is the statutory body that observes Minorities Rights Day on18 December every year.
About Minorities Right Day
On 18 December 1992, United Nations (UN) promulgated the Declaration on the Rights of Persons belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, to strengthen the cause of the minorities.
UN proclaimed that States shall protect the existence of the National or Ethnic, Cultural, Religious and Linguistic identity of minorities within their respective territories and encourage conditions for the promotion of that identity.
