People of Crimea province vote overwhelmingly to break with Ukraine and join Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, defying Ukrainian protests and Western sanctions, signs a treaty making Crimea part of Russia.

The G7 group of top economic powers suspend Russia from the powerful G8 over its annexation of Crimea and threaten to impose far-reaching sanctions if Moscow continued its incursion into Ukraine.

The World Health Organisation declares India free of the polio virus, making the country’s almost two-decade-long effort one of the biggest public health achievements in recent times. India’s last case of the wild polio virus was detected in January 2011 in West Bengal. Three years without any new cases means a country can be certified as polio-free.

India abstains from voting on an anti-Sri Lanka resolution at the United Nations Human Right Council (UNHRC) meeting in Geneva. The council adopts the resolution which calls for an international inquiry mechanism into human rights violations during the armed conflict in the island.
