England won a thrilling first Ashes Test by 14 runs at Trent Bridge on Sunday to go 1-0 up in their five-match series against Australia.
The tourists were all but out of the match at 231 for nine, needing 80 more runs to reach their target of 311, before a last-wicket stand of 65 between Brad Haddin (71) and James Pattinson (25 not out) threatened to turn the match on its head on the fifth and final day.
But a Test full of controversial umpiring decisions ended shortly after lunch when England reviewed Pakistan umpire Aleem Dar’s initial decision to give Haddin not out as England appealed for a catch by wicketkeeper Matt Prior off James Anderson.
However, third umpire Marais Erasmus, using Hot Spot technology, overturned the call and Haddin was out to end a dramatic match.
Anderson finished with match figures of 10 wickets for 158 runs.
The second Test at Lord’s starts on Thursday.
