{"id":4281,"date":"2012-04-19T06:12:17","date_gmt":"2012-04-19T06:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.generalknowledgetoday.com\/?p=4281"},"modified":"2012-04-19T06:12:17","modified_gmt":"2012-04-19T06:12:17","slug":"current-affairs-jim-yong-kim-is-elected-president-of-the-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generalknowledgetoday.com\/?p=4281","title":{"rendered":"Current affairs-Jim Yong Kim is elected President of the World Bank."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 id=\"mp-itn-h2\">In the news<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/c\/c1\/JYongKim.jpg\/79px-JYongKim.jpg\" alt=\"Jim Yong Kim\" width=\"79\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Jim Yong Kim <em>(pictured)<\/em> is <strong>elected<\/strong> President of the World Bank.<\/li>\n<li>The 52-year-old Mr Kim will succeed incumbent President, Mr Robert Zoellick, a former US diplomat who will demit office in June at the end of his five-year term.<\/li>\n<li>The US has held the Presidency in the bank\u2019s entire 68-year history, while a European has always led its sister institution the International Monetary Fund.But emerging and developing economies have been contesting this informal arrangement at both the IMF and World Bank and presenting their own candidates.\n<p>Mr Kim won the post after unprecedented challenge for the top job at the development lender from Nigeria\u2019s Finance Minister, Ms Ngoji Okonjo-Iweala, and Colombia\u2019s former Finance Minister, Mr Jose Antonio Ocampo.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the previous heads of World Bank, Mr Kim is not a banker, politician or a diplomat.
